The word of God has power to resurrect, revive or bring back the dead to life. Lazarus was dead but after four days, Jesus brought him back to life-Luke 7:11-17; Luke 8:49-56. The resurrection of Lazarus back to life was only possible through the spoken word. Jesus has power over everything, even death.
The scripture in John 11:4, describes the message of Jesus to Mary and Martha on account of Lazarus being sick. The words of Jesus were comforting and hope rising since Jesus predicted that Lazarus would live for God to be glorified. Even when Lazarus died and was buried after four days, the word earlier spoken- verse 23, came to pass as Lazarus resurrected on the last day and people praised God. Martha had comfort in the word of Jesus, and this sustained her faith. Jesus is the resurrection and the life and so those who believe in Him will never die.
• Discuss the meaning of Jesus response to Martha’s statement in the light of the passage.
• Explain the best practices Christians should respond to the loss of a loved one.
The resurrection of Lazarus from dead was informed by Mary’s action and statement in verse 32 which moved the heart of Jesus into action. Jesus is known for His caring, loving, compassionate and an empathic Father. A very mighty stone on the tomb of Lazarus was rolled away by the powerful word of Jesus- Verses 41 & 42. And many people who witnessed this miracle believed in Jesus and glorified God.
• What does the miracle of raising Lazarus to life teach about Jesus?
• How should Christians respond when consoling those who are bereaved of their loved ones?
• Christians should not mourn like unbelievers but should remember the word that those who die in the Lord will rise again and so be consoled.
• The word of God is very potent. It can do all things.
“Jesus said to her “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives in me will never die”. Do you believe this?
