OUR SAVIOUR'S CHAPEL,DELSU,ABRAKA Our Motto: Towards Maturity in Christ (Eph 4.13)

DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2023

TOPIC: A PROTECTIVE FAMILY

DEVOTIONAL READING: Acts 7:17-29

LESSON SCRIPTURE: Exodus 2:1-10

INTRODUCTION

King Pharaoh (Exodus 1: 16), gave an order to all the people saying, "Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live." It was during this period of unjust killing, oppression, and humiliation of the Jewish people that Moses was born.
Today's lesson focuses on the protective role played by Moses' family, especially his mother and sister when the birth of male children was almost a taboo.

THE LESSON EXPLAINED

A. The Birth of Moses (Exodus 2:1-6)

Moses was born to the family of Amram and Jochebed of the house of Levi when Pharaoh the King of Egypt ordered the slaughter of every Jewish boy. When the parents saw how adorable the child was, they decided to hide him for three months in order not to be killed according to the king's command (Exodus 1:22) and was thereafter placed in a basket at the bank of the River Nile. The king’s daughter was moved with passion at the cry of the baby and said, “This is one of the Hebrews 'babies." (v.6).

DISCUSSION TIME

• To what extent should Christians take risk of disobeying government laws?

• Discuss the action taken by Moses’ parents in the passage. How can we apply the same as Christians today?

B. God Raised a Helper for Moses (Exodus2:7-10)

Immediately Pharaoh's daughter carried the baby, Moses' sister came close to the princess to serve the purpose for which she stayed at a distance. She said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?" Thereafter, Pharaoh's daughter instructed the Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for her. Moses’ rescue by the daughter of King Pharaoh is attributed to God's divine intervention.

DISCUSSION TIME

• Was God’s hand upon Moses? Discuss.

• What would have been the story of the people of Israel if Moses had died as an infant?

Points to Note from the Lesson

• To the believer, when all hope seems lost, God always steps in.

• Christian mothers should endeavour to emulate the virtues displayed by Jochebed to protect her son

Memory Verse:

“And the woman conceived and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months” Exodus 2:2.
